Legalization of documents: what does it mean?

Legalizing a document means officially validating the authenticity and legal quality of the signature on the deeds or certificates and of the signatory.

Legalization is done by a public official or official.

For the legalization of a document, the name and surname of the person signing the document, the place and date of legalization and the name, surname, qualification of the public official who legalizes the document must be indicated.

Legalization of documents: when is it necessary?

Legalization of documents at the Prefecture: when is it necessary?

The Prefecture intervenes by legalizing the Italian document with the signature of a public official. The signature will actually be deposited when the Prefecture verifies the quality and authenticity of the same.

The Prefecture can legalize public acts such as:

Birth certificate, marriage certificate,… certificates issued by the Italian Municipality.
Certificates issued by universities, such as degrees.
Chamber of Commerce Registration Certificate.
Signature of the consular/diplomatic representation in Italy.
Signature of the ministerial manager.

Each Prefecture is responsible only for its own Municipality.

For some types of documents, a revenue stamp of €16.00 is required.

Legalization of documents in the Public Prosecutor’s Office: when is it necessary?

Not all documents can be legalized at the Prefecture. For some types of documents, legalization is required at the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the competent court.

– Certificate of Criminal Record, Certificate of Pending Charges

– Certified copies of legal documents

-Decrees

-Notarial signatures

– Sworn translations in Court

Also in this case, the competence of the Public Prosecutor’s Office for legalization is territorial.
